How We Keep Our Greens Rolling Smooth and True

At Sugarbush Golf Club in Davison, Michigan, we believe great greens don’t just happen—they’re earned, every day. For us, it’s about more than fast speeds or perfect looks. It’s about consistency, care, and a standard we won’t compromise. That’s what makes our greens roll smooth and true.

A Standard Set in the Early Hours

Each morning, before the first tee shot is struck, our team is already out on the course. Mowing lines are walked with precision. Cups are cut with purpose. Moisture levels are tested by feel and by meter. It’s quiet work—but purposeful. And it starts long before most players have had their coffee.

Tools and Techniques That Matter

We use Toro Triplex mowers equipped with vibrating rollers—giving us a cleaner, more consistent cut and a smoother roll. Rolling schedules are adjusted based on weather, tournament traffic, and turf health. We verticut the greens at least once a month to reduce the effect of the grain, keeping the surface uniform and true. Fertility is dialed in with data and decades of experience. We monitor disease pressure, scout for stress, and topdress just enough to keep things firm—but never too fast.

People Who Know What They’re Doing

Great greens require great people. Our superintendent has walked these fairways for years. He knows how rain behaves on the 4th green, how the wind dries out 9, and when the bentgrass needs a break. His team follows that same rhythm—sharp eyes, steady hands, and pride in every pass.

A Playing Surface You Can Trust

When players talk about Sugarbush, they talk about the greens. Fair. True. Just fast enough. Whether you’re playing for birdie or just to break 90, you’ll know what your putt will do—because we’ve already done the work to make sure of it.

That’s not luck. That’s Sugarbush.
